I have two questions please!!!

I had my interview last Monday, October 1st of 2007, with a very professional and very nice USCIS officer. I was told that I was approved and that I should wait for the oath letter.

Here is my first question:
Roughly how long does it take to receive the oath letter and how often do they have the ceremony in Chicago? I have to leave the country on the 22 of October.

My second question:
I have my native country passport; once I leave the country after taking the oath, I was told that I should be able to obtain my American Passport through an American Embassy in the country I will be.

Any input will be greatly appreciated!

P.S.
This applies to the Chicago Office:

Thank you in advance for your time!

hello Statikin,

Is your N-400 application is based on marriage or regular 5yrs immigrant? Can you please share your interview experience? By the way, once when you get your Naturalization Certificate I think you can apply at the American Embassies without any problems.

Thanks

Hi Sashko,

I don't recall all the timeline dates but here it is as follows:
I applied based on 5 yr. immigrant;
Applied on March 4 2007, with a received/priority date of March 23 2007,
Fingerprints appt. 5/01/2007
Notice of interview August 13 2007
Interview October 1 2007

Interview was great, I had a very nice officer,
I got to the Federal Building 30 minutes before the interview, I waited for about 5 minutes, I was called in, put under oath;
The interview started with the civics questions: 10 out of 100. (use the ones online @ the uscis.gov website to study off of)
However you have to get 6 out of 10 right.
Got the first 6 right, we then proceeded to go over the application to make sure none of the info changed.
After that I was told that I was approved for the U.S. Citizenship and i was given the N-652 form.

I was told to wait for the letter of oath which will take between 4- 12 weeks, but i was advised by the officer that it usually comes in 1-2 weeks....

I hope it will come soon, since I have to leave the country on the 22nd of October.

I hope this helps Sashko

I have no idea about Chicago ceremonies and their schedule, but it looks like you'll have to make the trip before you take the oath. I hope and trust that you're aware you're not a citizen until you complete the oath. So, if you don't get the oath ceremony before the 22nd that means you'll have to travel with your foreign citizenship, and there is no going to the US embassy to get a passport. You can reschedule the oath ceremony, but I think it's better to make the effort to go to the ceremony to which you were scheduled.

Thank you for the info. Huracan, my second question was based on having taken the oath. I'm just looking for possible time lines from the interview to the oath based on Chicago proceedings...

Chicago Timeline

Thank you for the info. Huracan, my second question was based on having taken the oath. I'm just looking for possible time lines from the interview to the oath based on Chicago proceedings...

A friend of mine applied his citizenship from Chicago DO. His oath came in approx 2 weeks or less if I remember it right. Once you take the oath & get the certificate, I strongly recommend that you should apply your passport from one of the passport offices in Chicago. I am sure they will expedite your passport & hand you back either the same day or the next day after they see that you are holding confimed airline tickets. My friend had an emergency & had to leave out of the country and was able to get his passport immediately.

Okay so the first question no longer applies. I received today my oath letter with the ceremony date of October 17th of 2007. Now all I have to do is figure out if I can get my passport out in 2 days in Chicago, or get it done at the Embassy in the country I'm visiting ( I'll be there for about two months, so there is plenty of time to get it done there, I just need to be sure it can be done)

Congratulations on the oath letter :) Now, as you say, onto question 2. For this one I have no idea. Chicago has a passport agency, and it is likely you can get your passport in 2 days there.

http://travel.state.gov/passport/about/agencies/agencies_905.html

It is telling that the supposed link to how to obtain a passport abroad doesn't link to anything now. At least when one goes to how to obtain the first passport.

I got this other page from the London U.S. embassy page:

http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/fta.html

If I had to do it myself I think I would try the Chicago passport office instead of doing it through the embassy.
