I have no idea about what happened today???

I went to NYC for my citizenship interview today. Everything (civics and English) went well. At the end, I was informed that I passed both tests yet the decision would be mailed to my address. When I asked for a reason, officer told me that there was another folder (???) and both folders (another folder and the one she had) had to be incorporated.... Do you know what this means? Is this their way of rejecting my application? Why would I have 2 folders? I would appreciate an answer (if you can) before I officially freak out! Thank you!
 
I think it is common for people who had student visas in the past. Did you have one? It mean you have two A-folders, possibly two A-numbers. They have to merge both folders and make sure there is nothing bad on your earlier A-file. It is usually a formality that just delays things for a month or two, it is not an indication of denial. I have seen a lot of people reporting this to the forum.
 
Interesing. I entered US on F1 visa. I can just hope this doesn't happen to me. I don't think we get any A number on F1 visa. Do we? I guess only USCIS knows what it does behind the scene. :)
 
Yes, I was a student. I never had an A- number though.. It wasn't an issue during GC interview that's why I panicked today. If they want, million things can go wrong... Now the waiting begins. Thank you for your response :)
 
USCIS usually never grant Alien no to any body unless there has been a case filed. In particular, students only get Alien no when they fall out of status and ICE or former D&R apprehend them.

another case could be an application made by the student to the immigration or some body onbehalf of student for employment based visa.

were you a subject of any of those?
 
I completed my masters degree in 6 terms instead of 4 but I was never out of status, never neded reinstatement. After school, I got 1 year internship which was approved by INS. This wouldn't cause a problem, now, would it?
 
Both my wife and I had multiple A-files/alien numbers - see this thread. I was once stopped at Port of Entry for secondary inspection because of this. NBC, before sending case to local DO, mostly consolidates A-files before sending. If not, some delay (typically around 3 weeks) can happen before adjudication. Fortunately, in our cases, the interviewer had consolidated files as should be the case for most. Good luck.

I don't think there is a number that you can use to find that kind of detail on your application. At best you can schedule an Infopass, but unless there is a problem on locating your other file (unlikely) it is not going to speed up things. I would wait a month and a half or two months before doing anything, perhaps you'll get the oath letter before that.
 
Student OPT

When you apply for OPT (optional practical training) under student visa, they issue you an A#. And when you get I-140 or I-130 approved you get another A#, unless they properly linked the previous one at the time.
 
Did you have a student OPT (it has A number)? SEVIS (I think it has A number as well)?

Don't worry. They probably need to consolidate A numbers and will approve your application soon. You will be fine. I had a very similar issue when I had a GC interview. It took 3 months to consolidate A numbers and approve my GC application so it depends on your local DO processing time.
