Dear Experts;
I have just landed in Toronto three days ago with my wife, 3 yrs son and 2 yrs daughter. My wife is 8 month pregnant and she is supposed to deliver a baby next month. I have applied for a health insurance and there is a three months waiting period before your health insurance is effective. Next month when my wife delivers the baby she would not be covered by insurance and as a result we would pay 10,000 Canadian dollars for the hospital that she would deliver in.
I have also inquired about buying a private insurance plan and all the private insurance plans don’t cover pre-existing conditions such as pregnancy and delivery.
I am stuck right now and there is no way on earth that I can pay 10,000 dollars for delivery in a hospital.
I need an urgent recommendation please on how to deal with that dilemma. Your help is appreciated.

Hi Waheshny_Khales

You said. You have applied for a health insurance and there is a three months waiting period before your health insurance is effective. I thought a landed immigrant person not allowed to apply for the health card before three months from the date of landing.
My question to you if I landed in Toronto I’ll be allowed to apply for the insurance health card in the same day, even I only lived in Canada for one day? Thnaks

First of all, you should have checked before you landed there if your wife was already pregnant..
Anyway, if you went to Canada from US, I suppose you might still have your American health plan valid. Call them and ask if they will re-imburse you for this. IF not, think of flying back to US and having the baby there...

Man, You got to be careful in such sensitive matters and should have made thorough arrangements before you take such a big decision !

In some of the proviences their is no waiting time and you are eligable for insurance from the very first day. You need to check and move their for a while. search in www.settlement.org you may find some help. Take care.

If you tried to explain the situation to the authorities/hospitals, they might understand.

If I were you, I would rather stay put where I am right now and ensure a safe delivery rather than trying to relocate to another place. The worst case is loss of money. Depends on your priority.

According to CIC website _

TIP >
In Ontario, British Columbia, New Brunswick and Quebec, there is a three-month waiting period before you become eligible for medicare coverage. If you are immigrating to any of these provinces, you should get private, short-term health-care insurance for the first three months. Insurance companies are listed in the Yellow Pages of all Canadian telephone books, under "Insurance."

Hospital charges....

While you are in Toronto, find out hospital charges in Sick Child Hospital and other hospitals. Go personally to the hospitals and talk to someone and explain them your situation. I am sure that they might have some good suggestions for you if not they can give you some kind of discount on the hospital charges

Best of Luck
