My passport is expiring in next year. I have applied for my greencard. I want to apply for a new passport(renewal). How early can I apply?? 8 months before the expiry, 6 months before expiry???. Thanks in advance.

this happend to one friend of mine ......this is what he did ............

contact the consulate/embassy and mention the details in the covering letter , they will renew the passport within 7 to 10 days .

1 yr prior to expiry . I have done it. mine expires feb 13 ,2002. i renewed on feb 15,2001. send my passport from LA by mail to SFO consulate. got back within 1 week by AIRBORNE exp. I have new GC stamp on new passport. old passport is cancelled and is tied to new one .

Thanks a lot for your information. Whole day I tried to contact SFO conulate without any success. This board is full of information. Thanks once again. Syngreen, is it possible to find more details if it is not a trouble. Thanks in advance.
One more question : What will happen to H1 visa which is valid upto 2003, if the old passport is cancelled.

I got mine done in the NY Indian Consulate. I went in the morning and got it in the evening.
Check this URL http://www.indiacgny.org/consular.html. It will guide you all the way. So if you are close to any consulates or plan to be there in the coming time you can do it personally as long as you have all the papers ready.
The old passport is returned to you. You have to keep the old and new passport together. The H1 stamp on the old one is still there and as both the passports are together, you are in good shape.

In the "new passport application form", do we have to NOTARIZE our signature in DECLARATION II Section. Mine is only renewal(i.e., after 10years). Thanks in advance
