I-94 Revalidation

Hi,

Last year my employer had my H1B extended and I received a Notice of Action (I-797A) which is valid untill June 2006. A new I-94 valid upto June 2006 came attached with the I-797A. After this, I also had a new H1B visa valid till June 2006 stampped in my passport.

Recently I made a trip to India and on returning back I was given an I-94 which is only valid till Feb 2005 (because my passport expires in Feb 2005).

I have applied for a new passport and will get it soon.

Since I have an approved Notice of Action (I-797A) which is valid till June 2006, does a new I-129 have to be filed for getting my current I-94 extended or is there some other way to extend the I-94 ? I understand that under regular processing this the approval process for an I-129 takes 4-6 months.

I noticed that a posting in 2003 in this forum, said that in this situation if I go to the local INS/BCIS office and show them the new passport and the I-797A they will be able to extend my I-94. Is this information/process still valid ?

Thanks in advance to all your replies and help.
