I -94 number

Hello
I was wondering that everytime we come back into the country, do we get a new I-94 no or the number remains the same. i.e even though the number on the new I-94 is different, we have to scratch that out and write the old one.
I am confused because my earlier I-20 had my I-94 number and when I came back, the officer wrote the same old number on new card scratching out the new number.
Could anyone check their I-94s and tell me if they also have the same situation like I have or they have new I-94 number now.
Thank you.

I got new I-94, every time I entered USA. I'm sure one has to handover the old I-94 before leaving the country(USA).

Did you handover your I-94 before leaving the country. If you didnt, then may be that is the procedure.

I am on a H1, may things are different for I-20 folks, I guess it is for students.

I got the answer

for students it remains the same. I am not a student now and will need to change when I go out and return.

I don't understand why the officer scratched out the new number to replace it by the old one. But since he did so, hopefully that must be a valid practice.

I travelled several times as parolee and as J-1 visa holder in past, and everytime I got new I-94 numbers. During my J-1 status, I went out of the US and re-entered twice and both the times I got different I-94 with different numbers.

Once when I converted my J-1 into H-1B (and my family's J-2 into H-4) without leaving the US (via I-539), the INS gave me a new I-94 (attached with H-1/H-4 approval notices) with the number that was the same as the number I had from the I-94 due to my most recent entry into the US (as J-1).

Best wishes,

Jigesh
