I have a question about the I-9. Where it asks to check:


1. A citizen or national of the United States

2. A Lawful Permanent Resident (Alien # A ________ )

3. An alien authorized to work until _ / _ / _
(Alien # or Admission # ____________ )


I know Asylees are not citizens and I know that we are work authorized even without a EAD. So where would we check? I cant believe the government hasnt updated this form to reflect Refugees and Asylees. Can someone please explain which one is the correct one to check?

I am not an expert on this issue, but I did pick the 3rd option. I answered indefinately on the date entry and provided my A number. The HR department did not say anything.

Yeah, I agree with cchong. Choose #3 and notate "Asylee, permitted to work for indefinite period in the US." Also print out a copy of the letter from department of social services just in case your employer ask for it. I don't know the exact link where the letter is located but search through the old posts.

A good HR representative will only look at your SS card and if they don't see any conditions such as "employment only valid with INS authorization" then they wont ask for further documentation.

No. Check Identity(Your drivers license) and SSN card(which shouldnt have anything written on them since ur an asylee)..NOTHING ELSE!..
