i-864 Tax Return Question

I'm filing the affadavit form (i-864) for my wife's Immigration Visa. I have been living in Japan for more than 10 years. The form asks me to submit tax returns for the previous 3 years. However, I was a student during most of that time and unemployed the remainder- the whole time in Japan. I've since been offered a job back in the U.S. As I have not filed for taxes in the U.S. in many years, what are my options at this point? Does anyone know? I realize I may be derilect in not filing over the years, even though I was paying in Japan, but does being a student during the 3 year prior period for this form still require me to go through the IRS? Does anyone know if it is possible to prepare a notarized statement and provide proof of my student status, along with a copy of my inpending job contract? Any help with this topic would be greatly appreciated.
