I just graduated from my undergraduate last summer. I married my highschool sweet-heart and decided to file for her paper. The one problem that we have right now is sponsor. My last year tax return were not good enough since I was still a student last year. I have a friend that are willing to be the co-sponsor. However, she has a family of 5 including her self, husband and 3 kids. Her annual income is 25,000 and her husband made around 60,000. They filed tax together. I was wondering if I just need her to sign the I-864 or her husband since her income is below 125% of poverty line for her family? I prefer not to ask her husband since we are only close to her only. Please help. Thank you.

Your income last year doesn't matter. What counts is your current income. Do you have a job? Is your current income sufficient? If so, you don't need a joint sponsor.

Since your friend's income is not enough, she can only be a joint sponsor if her husband also agrees to have his income counted as a household member of the sponsor. That means she fills out I-864 and he fills out I-864A.

If your friend's husband's income is good you can and should take joint sponsor. If your friend is principal joint sponsor then you would file I-864 and I-864A from her husband.
