Hello everyone! I really need to help and direction in regards to renewing my green card. I am here on a 2-year permanent residence green card because I was married to an American citizen. We were just divorced back in June and I have been told that I need to fill out the form I-751. My green card expires Feb 15, 2009. I know that if I had filed jointly I needed to file within 90 days of it expiring but since I am waiving the joint filing I have until it expires. I know that the process is long so what will happen to my condition while I am waiting for the form to be approved? Am I allowed to stay in the US and continue to work?
Also after filling out the I-751 do I need to fill out I-485 after this process? I am a little confused. I believe the 751 is all I need to get my permanent residence card for 10 years.
I am also worried that it won't be approved period. I did enter my marriage in good faith with my ex-husband (sad but true) but I didn't work during the time we were married and we lived with his mother. I have no paperwork such as bills or tax returns that even remotely show that we lived together for over 2 years. And even if there was anything my ex-mother-in-law won't even answer my calls anymore. What other forms of evidence can help me to stay here? I briefly talked with a immigration lawyer and because we were married in Europe and then lived in Europe 6 months after that. Plus once I got to the US my ex-mother in law didn't even know what forms to fill out so I was here on a visa for over 6 months before she even applied for me to get a green card. We were also married for over three years before we were divorced. I know these are all things to help me stay here but are the rules really that strict?
