I-751 and change of address: question

Hi all,

I submitted my I-751 application to remove conditions on my GC back in October 2013 to VSC (got transferred to CSC in late November 2013). Now, my lease is up on Feb 20th and I have to go on an overseas assignment for four months in late Feb too. I was thinking of changing the address to my mother-in-law's address (and her name in C/O field). Will that raise any flags and may result in a potential RFE? (we submitted tons of evidence with our application though). Also, more importantly, any idea how long does it take to get the address updated in USCIS system? I want to avoid a situation where they mail me at the current address long after the lease is up and it gets undelivered because I-751 cases don't typically get updated online from what I heard. What will be the best way to change the address? Online through USCIS website or AR11 form(?)?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

We submitted my wife's I-751 in Jan 2012 and it wasn't approved till the last week of September 2012. We moved a week before it was approved, and I did both change of addresses online.

If you file the AR-11 online then it updates your address in the master database immediately. At the end of the AR-11 online process, you will receive a confirmation number and an option to view an PDF copy of the completed AR-11. Make sure you write down the confirmation number, and it is also recommend that you save and/or print a copy of the PDF. Then you will be asked if you have any cases outstanding with USCIS. You can either put a service request in to change the address on the I-751 case (when asked what form you submitted you may need to select CRI89) or call the 800 number to have the service request made. I put in a service request online to have the address on the case changed. The request was reviewed by a contractor at the service center the next business day and it was changed manually. We received an letter in the mail confirming the request to have the address changed on the case about a week later.

So, I did the address change on a Saturday night. Case address was changed manually at the service center on Monday morning. Case was approved on Tuesday afternoon, received an case status email. We called USCIS on Friday and spoke with an Immigration Information Office (Tier 2) who stated the address in the system was the new address and that is were the card was to be mailed to. Wife received the approval letter in the mail at the new address on Friday and the card at the new address on Saturday. Received the confirmation of address change for the I-751 case in the mail on the following Monday.

Hope this helps.

Thanks dhlunar. Does help a great deal. Just couple of questions. When I change the address online and put receipt number for outstanding cases, do i put in a receipt number for my NOA1 or the one on my biometrics notice? Also, I don't see any CR189 in the menu, is it going to be I751? Do you remember?

And another question, will this change of address (specifically MIL's name in c/o field) create any potential red flags/RFE?

Thanks again

The receipt number is the one from the biometrics notice.

Sorry, since CRI89 is not there, then select I-751. I selected I-751 when I did it and I think it came up with an error, I can't remember what but something like no such receipt number with that form selected. I just submitted it with the error (that is why it had to be done manually). Internally the I-751 is referred to CRI89, don't know why.

Also, the C/O field should not be an issue. When my now wife was in college she moved every couple of months. When we were dating she would use my mom's address with C/O for one or two things that she might not hear about for months later. Never caused any issues. Are you going to have all your mail directed to your mother-in-law's address?

Don't forget, if who ever sponsored you by filling an I-864 is moving also, then they need to file an I-865. I-865 should be done within 30 days of the move and needs to be mailed to one of the service centers based on the state of the new address. A receipt notice is mailed to the new address stating the I-865 has been received and the information has been updated.

Thanks a lot my friend.

I put my I751 receipt number and i was able to change address. However, I noticed that the receipt number on my ASC (biometrics notice) is different than I751 receipt notice. And I tried putting that receipt number (the same receipt number shows up on my case transfer notice and the online case status) but it gives me error that receipt number and the form doesnt match their records.
I have heard two different views on this. Some people say that changing address using I751 receipt is enough while some say it is the CRI89 or the biometrics receipt notice that need to go with address change to ensure future RFE/approval gets to new address. Can you please advice since I will lose access to my old address mailbox soon?

Thanks,
