I have been a special registrant (done at San Jose INS office), and never went out of US after registration. My I-485 has been approved recently.

For my future travels with I-551 stamp on my passport, would I still need to report to departure control?

When I went for the registration, I asked the officer about this and she said that they would close my NSEERS account when I go for stamping. Well, I went home on AP before my 485 got approved and went through departure control. Upon reentry, I was exempt because of AP. If you did not hear anything about NSEERS account closing during stamping, do not take a chance and report to departure control one last time to close your account. That should be the end of it.
