I-485

Hi Everybody,
I am very new to US visa stuff and having a query thought of posting it here in this forum.

What is I-485? Is this related to Green Card processing?

It read somewhere in the internet that "Nonimmigrants in wide variety of categories are eligible to apply for EAD. Notably, H4 visa holders are not eligible to file for EAD until they apply for I-485."

Suppose, a H4 visa holder wants to work in the US. Is it so that if they apply for I-485 and then file for EAD, they would be eligible to work in USA?

Can anyone help clarify me with the info above.

Thanks in advance,
Regards
Isha

A H4 visa holder cannot work. On applying for adjustment of status (form used to submit application is called I-485) such a visa holder will be eligible to apply for EAD and on receiving the EAD card and applying for social security number could start working.
