I 485 without a Application Receipt Number

Hi: all
I am a USC in NYC, trying to get my dad the GC.
My dad came to US on B2 visa 6/2002
we filed I-130 in 6/2002, and got a visa number by 9/2002
The we filed I-485 by 9/2002, all we got back is a receite that they took the $255 application fee, But we don't have a Application Receipt Number for I-485 (we did have one for the I130)

Should I be worried about the missing Application Receipt Number for I-485 ?

I have a question to you. Did you dad stay here when you filed for his I-485? I believe his B2 visa entry is Max 6 months. Assuming he was here when you applied for his I-485, can he stay in USA legally, until a decision is made on his application?
 
He did file I-485 when he is in NYC
I believe that
if you are legal when you filing the i-485
you'll be ok even if during the waiting the b2 visa expired.
I remember reading it somewhere
