My wife(dependent) and I are in 485 stage. My wife has EAD and AP, but never used them and she doesn't have plan to travel outside US. My H-1 will expire 6 months later. My company has started preparation of my H-1 extension, but they don't want to pay cost on H-4 extension. This triggered my question. If my wife doesn't apply H-4, what are advantages and disadvantages? Any one has experience or can give some analysis?

I was in similar situation, but at the time of H1 renewal (Oct 2001), my I140 had not been approved yet, so, I paid for H4 extension for my dependents out of my pocket.
In your situation, your wife is safe w/o H4 as long as I485 is pending, she can travel on valid AP if needed. However, if your 485 is denied (God forbid!), she may become out of status. As you maintain H1, probably, it will be possible to get H4 for her again, but I'm not sure.
If you want be 100% safe, pay out your pocket for H4 now.
