I-485 pending, need to enter with H1b

My I-485 is currently pending, and my previous AP has expired. I need to take an international trip next month. Do I have to initiate the AP renewal process before leaving the States? Can I simply travel with the expired AP (no use of course) and enter with a valid H1B visa stamp?

Please advise. Many thanks for the help!

You don't need the AP to reenter if you have a valid H1B stamped in your passport and you are still working for the same H1B employer.

No. Wait until after you return to apply for a new AP.
