I-485 of dependent and legal separation

Need some education here..
What happens to the dependent's I-485 (employment based) in case of legal separation? Since technically, the two people are still married, is it safe to assume that the dependent's I-485 will proceed normally?

No. It's not safe. It's not necessarily hopeless either. I-485 will be approved if -in adjudicator's judgment- marriage was entered in good faith and you had an intention of living together forever at the time of applying I-485. Subsequent developments including divorce are not supposed to derail it.
