I-485 Denied After Transfer - Why?

A really bizzarre situation:
My parents came to the US on immigrant visas (got work permits at the airport etc). Both applied for I-485 (sent in the same envelope). Both got called for fingerprints. My father received his card 6 months after application.

My mother, however, could not get good fingerprints. She had them done four times. Case was transferred to the local (Houston) office in October of 05 and nothing was heard from them since. We just had an appointment with the local INS and the officer told us that the case was denied in January (it is July now!) but they have not sent out a notice yet. The officer said that they will send out a notice to appear before an immigration judge, but could not say the reason for denial (said that file was sent to Northern Records Center).

Any clues?? I am totally flabbergasted.

Thank you!

Discounting the hassle, an immigration judge will soon figure out this is stupid and order an approval is my bet. They both came on IMMIGRANT visas for God's sake!!!

If they arrived on 'immigrant visas' they couldn't have filed an I485.

I485 is for 'registration or adjustment of status to permanent resident'. If they arrived on immigrant visas, they became permanent residents the moment the officer at the border or airport admitted them. They might have had to file I90 in order to get a plastic card, but not an I485.
