I-485 approved but cannot wait for stamping

My friend got his I-485 approved and he has got to travel this weekend to India. He cannot get an appointment for his passport stamping till December. Can he travel overseas without getting his passport stamped and return? I told him that his advance parole is no good now, and he cannot come back on his H-1 either. Has anyone had any experience with this kind of situation?

He can give a try as walk-in

Most offices make a little room for passposrt stamping. Your friend can give a try at the local office, with his travel tickets he can show it's urgent, and get in.
It's better than relying on AP, which you're right it may not help him to come back in.
Tell him to get a ton of patience, be kind and never get mad at the officers.

Normally it's a good idea to get stamped before departure. But in case he cannot do that due to non-availability of appointment date before daparture date, he can use his AP for re-entry. Technically AP becomes invalid after I485 approval, but POE officer allow him in with AP (probably with differred inspection) on the ground that he is eligibile to re-enter. Probably the officer will ask why he did not get stamped before departure. Except that, I don't see any serious issue.
