I-485 approval (ND: July 2002)

My friend's I-485 approved on 7/23/04. His details are;

I-485 (ND: july 02.)
1st FP: Aug 02
2nd FP: July 03
EB-1
AD: 7/23/04.

How come he did 2nd fp before the first fp expired??.

He never requested for 2nd FP. However, he called customer service (1-800...) couple of times and enquired about his I-485. Luckily, he received the 2nd FP notice.
