Technically once approved you are deemed to be a legal permanent resident, but you need to get the passport stamping done to have a legal document to show somebody (if you need to for any reason) that you are a permanent resident.

Passport Stamping is a temporary legal document which indicates that you are a permanent resident until you finally get the card.
