I-485 and security checks

Hello Guys,

I received notice in reposne to my service request on my I-485 because my case is outside processing time. The letter from USCIS say

"We are currently awaiting the results of the required security checks on this case. These background checks are required for all who apply for the immigration benefit you are seeking".

Does any of you know what this means. Any idea how long "security check takes". Is there any way to find it out if it has cleared.

I probably think this is background checking being done on me. I don't care about security check but I get a sense that it is taking awefully long time to get the security checks such as this. Is this also called name check.

Anyway I appreciate if you can respond.

I also got one such letter ..exact same text in October 2005 and asked me to call back if nothing received in six months. I called 4 days ago and spoke to a immigration officer and he told me that how can I get a letter about security check in october when my case itself was sent for check in week of thanks giving 2005. So basically that is a pre printed letter and anyone doing enquiry for first time they shoot the letter so as to keep you quiet for next six months. The immi officer over phone however mentioned that his information is right and security checks take between six to nine months and hopefully my case will come in by end of May 06 and I should call back to check in June first week. I did not keep quiet after this. I sent a letter to USCIS vermont enclosing the copy of their letter about sec check received in october and asking the status. Let us see what they say. I have some hopes after speaking to immi officer that hopefully i will hear by end of may or begining of june.

Did you know the problem is on the USCIS or FBI side? Did you know your name check is cleared or not by the FBI?
 
I dont know if name check is completed. I just pray that it does not go in namecheck black hole :) . Immigration office just mentioned that the sec check is not yet complete. So I promply sent one letter to uscis as well as FOIPA request to FBI. Let us see what happens. My PD is May 2001. FP done April 2005. 485 was filed in July 2004. Still waiting. The last updated date changed two times in that thanks giving week when my case was sent for sec check(as per immi officer i spoke to).
