I-140 Priority date - Whats that?

I got my I-140 approval notice today. I am some confusion. What is a priority date (PD) and what is the significance of PD?

Approval notice has 3 dates on it.

Receipt Date 07/09/03
Notice Date 04/23/04
Priority Date 08/22/02

does any of this matter now? or its just another date...everything gets governed by the processing time of 485?

interestingly enough my lawyes send an email saying that i should get 485 in 6 months or less....i was thinking no way...
