Could I get some guidance please.

1) Currently on an L-1A, how do I go from here to a green card? Do I file the I-485 right away or do I have to file the I-140 first?

2) How do I get my immigrant visa number as referred to in the I-485 instructions below and what exactly is an “approved immigrant petition”?

“Who May File This Form I-485?

1. Based on an immigrant petition.

A. An immigrant visa number is immediately available to you based on an approved immigrant petition.”

You can file I-140 right now. This I-140 is called immigrant petition. With pending or approved I-140 You can File I-485. But it is also depends upon your Country of Birth.
 
Born in South Africa. So this is a petition for a change of status and if approved I have to file for the change (I-485), is this correct? Thanks for the help.
 
Thank you for the information, very helpful. Someone mentioned to me about “Premium Processing”. Is this an open process or are only a limited amount of visas processed this way at any given time? If so, where can I find out about the availability for this processing?
