I-140/ I-485 Processing

Can anyone of you Gurus shed some light on what is involved in the processing of I-40 and I-485 applications? What entails behind the scenes once your application is received by USCIS? I know that FBI performs name check and finger printing during I-485 processing. But apart from that what else is done that is so time consuming, or is it just that most of the delay is caused while the application is sitting in the queue. Anyways it will be nice to know about the actual process.
