I-131

Folks,

I am a Permanent Resident since Jan 2001. I am planning to relocate to India before the end of the year. I am planning to apply for I-131 re-entry permit, before I leave. But, looks like the time it takes for the document to be processed by INS is such that I might not receive it before I go. I have a few questions regarding this process :

1. Can I apply while I am here, and request it to be sent to an overseas address (in my case, India).

2. If I come back within 6 months do I need to show the I-131 document.

3. I know that the timeline for citizenship application gets affected with I-131. Is the timeline affected by just applying for it, or when in fact used, ie returning after a overseas stay of more than 6months/year.

4. If my wife works here and I visit her every six months, is it reasonable to assume that I am inteding to keep the permanent residency.

Thank you for your help,

Thank you, JoeF for your informative response.

My relocation is due to the transfer of work/jobs from US to India (I know this is politically very sensitive). I will still be working for the same company. I will still maintain Bank accounts, file taxes (along with world wide income), maintain IRA accounts etc. Does this help my case that I am not really abandoning the place of residence.

As suggested I will also try to file N-470 for preserving the residency for naturalization purposes, since this transfer is job related.

Thanks a bunch
