I just recently became a US citizen last month I requested for my name to be changed to my married name but to my surprise after my oath ceremony I received my Naturalization certificate they did not change it. On my Certificate it say's married but still showing my Maiden name.

I applied for a US passport a week ago, and asked them about my dilemma I want to use my Married name in my passport but my Naturalization Certificate shows my maiden name they said that they would go by what is on my California ID which is my married name:p:D I know I can send my Certificate and file for I-565 but if it won't be a problem using my Maiden name in my Certificate I might as well keep it that way.

Now my only problem is I am petitioning for my Husband( I-130 petition for an alien relative) one of the requirements that I need for proof of citizenship is my Naturalization Certificate and Copy of my US passport. Would that be a problem if in my Naturalization Certificate says my Maiden name? but it shows Married on my status?:confused:

If you think its a mistake on USCIS side to have not printed your married name you could request them to make the change from your maiden name on the naturalization certificate. If that doesn't work you need to file Form N-565.Very important to correct it.

I-130 for Spouse

Hi Nancy thank you for your reply. I know for sure it's USCIS fault I gave them all the requirements that they needed. I don't mind correcting it anymore as long as it wont affect my petition for my husband. The only thing that is preventing me from correcting my last name in my certificate is that it may take awhile to get it back and i need it to file for my husband's petition.

You can leave your maiden name on the certificate if you want, and still use your married name for everything else. The only problem with having your maiden name on the certificate is that whenever you show the naturalization certificate you'll usually also need to show the marriage certificate so the authorities can recognize the connection between both names.

For his green card process you only need to submit a copy of the naturalization certificate; if they want to see the original it would be at the interview. So as long as you make copies before giving it back for correction, you'll be OK.

If there is a mistake, you're supposed to point it out at the oath ceremony and then they'll print another one with the corrections. But if you act fast, you might still be able to get it corrected for free, and without filing N-565. Make an Infopass appointment, bring the both the natz. certificate and marriage certificate, explain that it was a USCIS mistake, and hopefully they'll agree to correct it without charging you. Some places can even print a new certificate the same day.
