I am a US citizen and I am planning to marry someone in India and then apply for an immigrant visa for her. I plan to have a Muslim marriage. I would need to submit our marriage certificate for the visa. However in India the rules about how to obtain a marriage certificate are complicated and I'm very confused. I've read in places that I have to stay in India for 30 days before marrying and getting a marriage certificate issued. In other places I read that that is only for civil marriages and for each religion there are different regulations. But some places say that the 30 days rule applies to citizens of other countries, regardless of religion. Most of India is Hindu so when I do google searches, I mostly get information on Hindu marriages. Does anyone know what I need to do to get a marriage certificate acceptable by USCIS if I have a Muslim marriage?? Thank you.

i had a hindu marriage, and later on registered the marriage and got the marriage certificate in 2 days. i dont think the kind of marriage matters. Its all about registering is what makes it legal. you are supposed to register at the office which has jurisdiction over the location where the marriage was held. for that u will need the wedding cards, both from the groom and the bride's.passport size photograph, one for their file and the other for the certificate, a picture of the couple from the ceremony and a 2 witnesses. This is how i got mine. I aint sure if the procedure varies from state to state. We had a hindu wedding in kerala, and got it registered at the village office. and got the certificate in 2 days.

good luck
