How to prove legal status while on AOS

How can we prove our legal status while on AOS. My friend had his auto loan denied because he could show only a valid EAD card, and a receipt notice (485). I-94 is expired because it is issued just for a year.

If he can show AP then it may help him to get auto loan

EAD + I-485 should be sufficient. The lender acted inappropriately and possibly illegally. Either get a lawyer to send a letter to them, or go elsewhere.

Next time though, don't show the expired I-94. It cannot help and it will only hurt.

Please show valid unexpired EAD and a letter from your lawyer that your GC application is pending and you are maintaining valid status.

Probably the expired I94 was the issue.
Letter from Attorney will be a good idea.
Thanks a lot guys.

When you have multiple documents with different validity dates, people making a decision tend to focus on the earliest one to expire. Where possible, only show them the one or two documents with the longest validity date. If they ask for an I-94 tell them you don't have it and don't need it because you have an I-485.

It is a real big issue. It is always hard time to pursue people about I 485 status. No body really understand AOS pending status. I used to explain them that I 485 is the last stage of Green card process and application is pending at USCIS. Some people recognize non-immigrant (working visa, like H, L etc) status and immigrant status (Green card). Some people have mis concept that If alien's application for green card is pending, he should hold non-immigrant (working visa status) until green card approved.
Unfortunately no one understand this Hanging Status (I 485 pending) !!

Thats exaclty what happened. In spite of providing documentations such as 485 receipt and valid EAD, the bank denied saying they accept only a valid visa with 797, or a green card or citizenship. Isnt this stupid (from our perspective)?. Is there any gov site that show the documents that can be used to prove legal status? I know I-9 has something, but that is for employment eligibility. Any ideas will be appretiated. He can go elsewhere, but looks like the APR is worth to give another try. I am posting this here because many of us are in the same situation, and we too may come across such a situation.

A letter from a lawyer explaining that the denial was improper should be enough to convince them. If it's a low interest rate the $100 (or whatever) for the attorney's letter will be peanuts compared to the savings from the low interest rate.

But before going for the letter, it's worth a try to speak to a manager (if that hasn't been done already) and explain the situation, pointing out that they are probably illegally denying the loan. And if necessary, ask them to forward copies of the documents (not including the expired I-94) to one of their own attorneys who should be able to verify that the documents are sufficient.

Any letter from attorney that has this information should clear doubts about I-485 pending status

INA § 212(a)(9)(B). Properly filed affirmative applications submitted pursuant to INA § 245(a), 245(i) and 249 registry toll any unauthorized time and are considered to be a period of stay authorized by the Attorney General. Memo, Pearson, Exec. Assoc. Comm. Field Operations (HQADN 70/21.1.24-P, AD 00-07) (March 3, 2000).

There is a minor correction now.
I-485 pending status is period authorized by DHS Director (not by the Attorney General anymore)
