I would greatly appreciate your advice on my father's situation.
Please excuse for my bad English. I will try my best to clarify my concerns.
Thanks in advance.

SITUATIONS:
1). My father need to travel back and forward between USA(NY) and CHINA for about 3yrs.

2). He is not going do anything abroad (not to work or invest in CHINA).

3). My grandmother is sick and 91yrs old & My father's intention is to make her happy and spend time with my grandmother for rest of her remains.

4). My father will be most likely to spend 5 months in CHINA & 1 month in USA and then travel back to CHINA for another 5 months and back to USA for 1 month with my family. CONTINUOUSLY for about 3yrs.

QUESTION:
1). What should my father do to preserve his Residency & GC?

Nope it can be used also if you have been out of the country for less than 2 years. If he is out for 8 months out of the year..i would recommend getting a RP.

Besides what wantmy... said, I think the father is trying to do 5+1 deal to retain his green card. This is risky as the 2nd or 3rd time the CBP will notice. If that's the case, he should just file the RP and not have to worry about RP.

See the following:

If this is going to be a pattern, Customs and Border Protection is going to notice some time. They will likely ignore first time, ask questions the second time, and probably ask serious questions the 3rd or 4th time. 5 months in China and one month in US is what I referred to by 5+1.
