Hi,

I am asking this for my friend.

My friend has green card and she went back to China for a short visit last September. Since her visit was supposed to be a shor one (two-week) and she did not apply for re-entry permit before she left US. However, she was hospitalized when she visited China. Right now, based on her health situation, she was not allowed to travel from China back to US, so she will have to stay outside of US for more than 6 months.

She wants to know if she still can apply the re-entry permit now. If she cannot apply for re-entry permit, how she can keep her GC after staying outside of US for more than 6 months.

You need a reentry if you are out of the country for more than 1 year . 6 months is fine, however tt may break continous residency
requirement for Citizenship purposes. Your friend will
not lose his/her GC if the person returns within a year
