How to keep green card status if left the country?

Hello,

I am a canadian citizen born in canada, I am currently working in the US on a TN. I want to go for the green card but have a question.

I have read that if you leave the country for more than 6 months you automatically lose your green card.

If I got a green card and then after a few years my wife wanted to move back to canada but we still wanted to leave the option open of coming back to the states. How could I keep green card status if I lived in Canada?

basically you can't have a GC and not live in the US. The is the purpose of permanent residence. There are some exceptions for extended stays outside of the US ( a student studying abroad, etc.) which require obtaining a re-entry permit before leaving.
