How to get your case no. without I485 receipt?

My mail date is Nov 16 but I understand that receipt will take 3mths to come - so how do you find out the case no., RD, ND etc without the receipt? Someone on this board had mail date of mid-december & was able to check the status already on the AVM. Am I missing something?
 
If you don\'t want to bother IIO,

you may read your check payed for the I-485 application and cashed by INS carefully and find out the hand-written case#.
 
Do IIOs give us information now?

Throughout I140, getting information from an IIO was like drawing blood from a stone because we were the beneficiary, not petitioner. Is it not like that with I485?
 
Check with your bank

INS writes the EAC number on your checks. Get the encashed checks, or copies, from your bank. Remember, the EAC numbers for I-485, EAD and AP are different. You need to get copies of all your checks if you also applied for EAD and AP. By the way, I sent my papers on Nov 20 and I got the receipts around Dec 26, 2001. My RD is Nov 21, 2001 and ND is Dec 12, 2001.
