How to change FNU in Visa and INS

Hello All,
I am posting this query for my husband. He is in US now. I would like to get some information on how to change the FNU in visa and INS.

In his passport, his surname is blank, and given name is there. But in Visa and INS, the names are interchanged and Given names is written as FNU. He is facing difficulty in getting SSN now.

Original Name:

Last Name : YYYY
First Name : XXXX

Passport :

Last Name(Surname) :
Given Name : YYYY XXXX

Visa and INS

Last Name : YYYY XXXX
First Name : FNU

I would like to know what he needs to do on the same to correct the name. The SSN authorities are not ready to accept his application.

Please let me know how he can correct this, there itself.

Iam also facing the same issue and i am having valid H4 visa, but right now i am in Bangalore, India. would like to know what i need to do to fix this issue while in india.

any pointers are welcome,

Hey..hope you rproblem is solved by now...if not then here's my reply...

you should not be worried abt. this..only thing is now you should leave the things as it is..now the passport shows no last name and only first name like XXXX YYYY...so thts ur husband's first name officially....In US everything works with last name..so instead of putting first name in VISA...they have put first name as last name because there was no last name in passport..to them XXXX YYYY is his full first name..and they have put FNU ( first name unavailable in his VISA)...so now when he applys for SSN here in US they will record all the VISA and Pasport data with his LAst name issued in the VISA!!!..so ask him to go to VISA office and tell them he only has one name thts the first name in passport because of lack of first name VISA was issued as FNU XXXX YYYY..they will issue him the SSN with same data...HIs card will also say FNU XXXX YYYY..basically now FNU is his first name here...later on..when he gets his SSN he can go to INdian embassy in US and get his name corrected and then he can report INS abt. tht..and later he can take the record from INS to SSN office to get thins fixes..it's hard but it can be done..believe me..bcoz I have also done this..my passpst was also missing last name...but got the SSN without any problem...have faith it can be done...
