We work so hard to get a naturalization certificate and it is crazy that immediately after you get it - you have to submit it (the original) to the post office for passport application.
What happens if it gets lost?
Anybody ever heard of a situation where the passport application (with the naturalization certificate) gets misplaced; and the poor person is left with neither a certificate nor a passport?

Nope - the USPS and Dept of State actually seem competent in this regard. Don't think I've ever read of someone not getting their certificate back with their passport.

Of course it is possible to lose it as the priority mail (their standard method) delivery is not 100% guaranteed. I used to have many mails mistakenly delivered to next door by an inattentive postman. Upgrading to express mail is probably smart as the post office takes better care of express mails.

And who knows what's going on at the passport processing facility. That said, I would think that missing packages are rare. And it is something everyone has to deal with anyway.
