I think immediately. I actually let him know after I got the stamping done. He asked me to send me a copy of the card when I get it. I did not do that, as I am planning to leave him anyways and what he has (i.e. my passport stamp) is valid till the end of this year. So I dont care.
Bottomline, your employment status should be current with him because as an employee it is your responsibility to provide on what basis you are working with him and if there is change in that basis you are required to update him.
