How soon to come back to US to maintain GC

hi.
My parents came here last year June as new immigrants
and left back for India in middle of January.

Now, they have to come back to US again to maintain
GC. My question, how latest can they come to the
US without any problems with the INS at the
port of entry. They want to delay coming
as much as possible due to some personal reasons
but still maintain the immigrant status.

Anybody been through this scenario?? What are
my options???

They can apply for the re-entry permit. that way they need to come once every 2 yrs... Check bcis web site for details..

I thoght the re-entry pemit can only
be applied for *before* leaving US. Once, u have
left US, u cannot apply for it. My parents did not
apply for a re-entry permit before leaving US.

So that does not look like a viable option.
