how soon can file application for re entry permit after landing

my parent just landed 2 days ago for immigration. they plans to return to home country after receiving their green cards. They will probably remain there for about 2 years before they will come back to US for good. I think they have to file re entry permit. Does anyone know when they can do that? file now or have to wait until receive green cards in hands.
 
They can file it right now. Whenever they need to give proof of their permanent resident status (for the reentry permit process or otherwise) before the green card arrives, they can use the stamp they got in their passport at the port of entry.
