how reliable are rush passport services?

A few people have reported positive results from similar services (run a search of this forum to find them). I don't recall anyone relating anything bad, but at the same time there is only a very small percentage of people going that route.

The state department will issue a same day passport for urgent travel needs for 160$ approx 50% less than what this company is claiming to do it for(299$% + the passport fee).

Don't see a reason why any one would go that route. Just my 0.02 C

Here is my two cents.

If you live close to where you can walk up to the office like the one in chicago...
then it is not worthy to go trhough them.
if you walk up to the office with travel itenary then they will issue the passport same day or next morning.
If your travel is not immediately in next two weeks you can just walk up to any post office and do the same(ask for rush service) I am sure you will get it back in less than 10 days.
I went through same excercise for my childern.
for my first kid I got it same day in chicago office when I lived there and for my second kid I just did a rush service at post office and got it in 10 days.

Regular Processing Times Reduction

Regular Processing Times for passport production have reduced considerably from the chaotic times from earlier this year. An application for my son's renewal (regular processing, not expedite) took 20 calendar days to arrive from Hot Springs, AK - site of the newest passport production facility.

However new rules will go into effect on Jan 31, 2008 and that along with the spring break vacationers might produce a repeat of what we saw earlier this year. I agree with others posters that unless there is a compelling need for using the outside rush passport companies the expedite with State Dept should work at least for now!
