How much time it takes to get SSN for H1B guy entering first time in USA?

Hi All,

How much time it takes to get SSN for H1B guy entering first time in USA. My friend landed in USA on H1B visa frist time in October second week. SSN office says that, you will get SSN in 1 to 2 months. Is that right ? Without SSN can we open bank account or can take driving licence ???

ssn/driver's license

You do not need SSN to open Bank A/C or to aplly for Driving License.Valid Passport & I- 94 is required.
