How many months to receive GC Plastic Card

Hi Friends,
I got my I-485 approved and got my passport stamped on July 27th. I would like to know how long would it take before I get my GC plastic card ? Does it matter where I live (I am in California) and can I call INS about the status of the card? is there any risk if I leave the country without GC card for 3-4 months ?

Any advices and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

My PP was stamped 8-2001.

At that time I was told that the plastic card could take up to one year.

Today I went to INS to get a second PP stamp. Apparently INS has mislaid my application for the card so I had to get new photos and finger prints taken and restart the process of getting the plastic card.
