How big the backlog for Family Based Green Cards ?

Hi All,

Let me go straight to my core question: does anybody know what the backlog is for Family Based Green Card ? Approximately of course...
On the Visa Bulletin, it is stated that they give 226,000 per year, and give an estimate of the split by preference category http://travel.state.gov/visa/frvi/bulletin/bulletin_4371.html

However, since the priority dates don't seem to move a lot... I was wondering how many there are waiting!

My in-laws became US citizen in 04, filed a petition for my wife (Italian, over 21 unmarried), we got married in 05 updated our situation and thus went from 1st to 3rd priority (married over 21), received approval of the petition in Nov 07, and are just waiting for a visa number!! It is so frustrating to somehow have been said that the petition is OK, but that it can take years to simply issue a number! We've been in the US for 2 years under my L1-B visa, but my role is more "specialized" than "management, and the lawyer said that filling through employement in my current situation would take over 5 years. In the current context, there is nothing available for potential promotion within my company, but I have been contacted by many other companies for which I cannot work based on my visa status, and they are reluctant to sponsor a green card for a new employee (want to start with H1B and then go to green card if everything is OK). However, next H1Bs are for Oct 09.... Vicious circle, can't stand it anymore!

Any comment, advice, info would be welcome!

Thanks,

Olivier
