How long with same employer

I got my green card thru Consular Processing in January 2004 and my wife got it in March 2004.
1. How long should I work for my current employer to be safe in terms of citizenship.
2. Also I plan to go back to India and stay there with my parents for more than a year. What are my options? I heard of Re entry permit which is valid for two years. When can I apply for it.

I dont about reentry permit for 2 years, but on Greencard if you plan to leave US for more than 180 days, you might have some serious troubles at the time of re-entry.
Especially since you plan to apply for citizenship, one of the clauses clearly says that
"of the 5 yrs after GC, 2.5 or more have to be in US and of those years outside US, no period should be more than of 180 days etc"

They may assume that you intend to abandon your permanent residence if u plan such long stays outside US.

Answer: There is no set timeline. But rule of thumb says remain with GC sponsoring employer for a minimum of 6 months since gc approval date.
