Instructions in N400 says if you are married to a citizen for 3 years and in US physically for those 3 yrs you are eligible to apply for naturalization. In case you got GC via employer you will have to wait 5 year and be physically present in US for 5 years.
You can apply 3 month earlier before eligible. So waiting time is 4 years and 9 month. You don\'t have to be in the USA for 5 years.
2.5 years without major interurption is enough
You may file N-400 90 days (and not 1 day sooner!) before the date you will meet the continuous residency requirements, assuming you have also met physical presence requirements of being in the U.S. for 30 months out of this period.

Is there in legalese any mention of 5 years after Permanent Resident?
I was wondering if the requirement of 5 years after having achieved immigrant status is set in stone .Otherwise can one use the years of his/her taxing paying existence in United States on H-1B/L-1 towards it?
Thoughts .....
