How long to take a new H1?

If one person went outside of USA, does it mean he lost H1 status
unless he apply for a new H1 visa?

If he want to apply for a new H1(I797), how long he have to wait?
one year at least outside USA?

Hi, all:

Anybody know it?

Now I had an old I797 form which expiration date is 05/31/06. But I have
travelled out of USA. So I think it is not validate any more. If it is valid, could I transfer from A school to B school? And take this new transfer H1B form to reenter USA.

Any reply will be much appreciated!
