Friend of mine in California got laid off, just after his passport got stamped by INS. In fact about 50 consultants were laid off from the same company. The company arranged a meeting with their lawyer a day before laying off the people. The lawyer advised all of them, that they are free to go anywhere after they stamped the passport. In fact he went on saying that you are free after their 485 was filed. Dont know how true is that!

yep, you can go BUT if you make substantial changes it is covered
under \'intent to committ immigration fraud\' - that you filed I485 as say a
nuclear engineer and were approved on that basis, when all along you
wanted to go work for microsoft (just as an example of \'significant change\').
It won\'t do you any harm - until you try to get citizenship. At that point they
review all your immigration/legal standing and can re-open your I485 if they
show you had acted with \'intent to commit immigration fraud\' eg changed jobs the
next day. Exceptional circumstances like the company going out of business do
not get counted against you as it was something outside of your control and
thus no \'intent\' is provable.
