How long it takes for Receipt #, A# ??????

My wife is a US Citizen. I mailed I485(864-G325A)/I130/I765 with all necessary documentation on 4th March, 04 to LOS ANGELES district office. All the cheques were cashed by INS on 10th March, 04.
Now, I'm awaiting Receipt notices (WAC #) for the documents filed & following are my queries_
- I called up National Svc Ctr & was told that LOCAL OFFICES (i.e. LA) don't issue any Receipt notices, only Service Centers do so. <<< IS IT TRUE >>> She told me to sit back & wait.
- When is the Alien # issued ?? Is it sent separately by mail ??
As of Mar16, LA office is processing I-765 of Jan 30,04 & I485 of July 15,03. So hopefully, within next 2 months, i should've the EAD card. Now will the EAD have A# info as well. I don't know if A# is there on the EAD card ??
- When should i go for I-693 ??
- I need to apply for AP as well which is to be filed with CA Svc ctr. As mentioned on I131, do i've to wait till i get the A# ??

A# will be assign and replace your old one (if u have one before), it will show on your EAD card,
Yes, they won't issue you a recepit w/ WAC #. But you will get a letter by mail, tell u to do the finger print & pick up your EAD card, it took me 2 mos in SF office.
If you need to apply AP, it will take faster, around 1 mos.
 
Thanks grace248 for ur reply. I don't have an OLD A#. I'm on H1B presently.

So as i understand.................
1. I won't get any receipt # but only a letter telling me to get fingerprinting done.
2. I wudn't know my A# till i get EAD. So i can't apply for AP now & can do so only after getting EAD. Pls advise.
3. Is it advisable to get Medical I-693 done before INS instructs to do so ??

Got A#

I got a letter yesterday for Fingerprinting on apr24... yeeeeehhhhhuuuu.....
This letter has A#... Good god it took just 20 days for INS to send the letter....
Will keep posting my experiences...........

Pls let me know anything i need to take care of for FP.
