how long for GC?

After you filled for AOS (RD may 2002) how long usually it takes to get the GC? I heard you receive first a temporary GC (or a stamp on your passport saying you are waiting for the GC). And after you receive the GC how long can you be out of the US?

Regards!

After you file for AOS it normally takes 1 year to get your GC approved. It can take a little less or a little more depending in which Service Center your AOS was filed.

Once your AOS is approved you get a stamp on your passport and you are totally free.

The actual card arrives by mail up to another year later, but with the stamp in your card you are already a green card holder.

thanks for your reply.

After your passport is stamped how long can you be out of the US? I heard you have to come to the US every year and must have residence here. Is this true? Can we just use a friend's address? Is there a limit of time we must stay in the US so I keep GC?

Regards.

You can stay up to a year outside the country.
If you are planning to stay out longer you need to apply for a re-entry permit before you leave.

Also, I heard they try to investigate if you still have a job / place whenever you are gone for long periods of time. So, coming back once a year is kind of dangerous.
