I am not sure how long it takes but please specify what kind of petition is pending and what will you file (spouse of USC or LPR). I recommend keep the petition and when either one gets approved, just cancel the other one.

the first petition that was filed for me was a petition by my mother, who is a legal permenant resident, I am now soon to be married and me and my spouse are looking to file forms i-130, i-131, i-765 & form i-485

I was told before that normally you cannot have 2 existing petitions going on at the same time and that I should cancell the first one that was filed for me before started filing the above stated forms with my soon to be wife

Once you get married, your I-130 will get null and void. LPRs cannot file for married children.

thanks for the information but how confident are you that ur statement is true...

so basically I dont have to write a letter asking for a cancellation of my mothers petition?

I went through the same scenario. Even if I-130 gets approved, you have the option not to file for I-485. My father filed for me when he was LPR in 1998 and I just received RFE last week. I am not going to reply to the RFE and my case will be automatically closed. However, if you want to be satisifed, feel free to write them a letter asking them to cancel the petition.
