How long do you have to wait for filing citizenship?

Hi,

I am posting this message on behalf of a friend. She has obtained her green card sponsored by her relative. How long does she have to wait before she can file for citizenship - 3 years or 5 years ??

Your friend will have to wait 5 years. The 3 year PR requirement is only applicable if your PR status was obtained through marriage to a US citizen, and you remain married to that person at the time of filing your N-400.

If you are married to a USC at the time of filing your N-400 its 2 yrs and 9 months. If you have a GC based on a battered spouse petition 2 yrs 9 months (section 319(a) of the INA ) else its 4 years and 9 months.
